It is one of the twenty-seven sovereign states that make up the European Union. Constituted in a state of social and democratic law, its form of government is the parliamentary and federal republic. Its capital is Berlin. It is made up of sixteen federal states (Bundesländer) and is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark and the Baltic Sea; to the east with Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south with Austria and Switzerland; and to the west with France, Luxembourg, Belgium and Holland. The city of Büsingen am Hochrhein, located in Switzerland, is also part of Germany. The territory of Germany covers 357,022 km² in area4 and has a temperate climate. With almost 83 million inhabitants, it is the most populous country among the member states of the European Union and is home to the third largest group of international migrants. After the United States, Germany is the second most popular migration destination in the world.8
